Byggnad

Däggdjuren är jämnvarma ryggradsdjur (vertebrater), hårbeklädda och med mjölkkörtlar, som producerar ett näringsrikt sekret (mjölk) som ungarna föds upp på. Dessa karaktärer är tillräckliga för att särskilja däggdjuren från reptilerna, från vilka de kan härledas. Med undantag för kloakdjuren, som lägger ägg, är alla däggdjur vivipara, dvs. föder levande ungar; analöppningen är skild från urogenitalöppningen (utom hos kloakdjuren, vilka har en gemensam så kallad kloaköppning) och fostret (embryot) får sin näring från en moderkaka (placenta) (återigen med undantag för kloakdjuren, och ett stort antal pungdjur).
